Enrolling in Medicare

You are generally eligible for Medicare when you turn 65 years old, or if you have a qualifying disability.

If you want to enroll in Part A and/or Part B, you can sign up online at the Social Security website, by phone (1-800-772-1213), or in person at a Social Security office.

If you are automatically enrolled in Medicare because you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, you will receive your Medicare card in the mail about three months before your coverage starts.

If you are not automatically enrolled in Medicare, you will need to sign up during your initial enrollment period, which is the seven-month period that begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends three months after the month you turn 65.

Now that you're enrolled in Medicare...

You will need to choose a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage Plan.

Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap, are private insurance policies that work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to cover certain out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. They provide standardized coverage options and allow you to see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare.

On the other hand, Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) are comprehensive health plans offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans combine the benefits of Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and often include additional coverage such as prescription drugs, dental, vision, and hearing. They may have networks of doctors and hospitals, and you typically need to use providers within the network to receive full benefits.

In summary, Medicare Supplement plans supplement Original Medicare and help cover the gaps in coverage, while Medicare Advantage plans replace Original Medicare and provide comprehensive healthcare benefits through private insurance companies. The choice between the two depends on individual needs, preferences, and budget.  Click the link below to learn more about your plan options.
